In Halle 550, we have deliberately chosen an event partner that lives sustainability and whose venue is easily reached by public transportation. As part of the Migros Zurich coop, Halle 550 is proud of its sustainability certification.
The latest renovations in 2022 were monitored by the City of Zurich’s office of environmental health and safety (UGZ) to ensure that current construction requirements for environmental protection were met.
Read about how the Halle 550 team strives for sustainability:
Packaging & recycling:
- We use recyclable PET containers, to-go coffee cups made of recyclable paper, and wooden stirrers.
- You’ll find the following recycled materials throughout the event location: glass bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard, cooking oil, cans.
Climate protection measures:
- We hardly use any paper at all in our day-to-day business, working instead on laptops and iPads.
- Lighting have motion detectors in restrooms, stairwells, and corridors.
- Natural light throughout the building: Artificial lighting in offices and at the event location can be shut off during the day.
- General awareness for sustainability is relatively high in Switzerland, which means all employees are accustomed to applying sustainable practices in their everyday lives – and at work, too.
- We take responsibility when it comes to recycling.
- We use environmentally friendly cleaning products.
- In addition to hand dryers, we also provide paper towels made of recycled paper in our restrooms.
Energy:
- EWZ: The electricity from EWZ, the local utility, is from 100% renewable sources.
- As part of the Migros Zurich coop, we use renewable electricity exclusively.
- Heat generation has been converted to “clean” district heating, leading to a drastic reduction in “gray” energy.
- On days without events, the temperature in the hall drops to 16°C.
- LED spotlights are used throughout the venue.
- smARTec uses only energy-saving LED spotlights.
- Central HVAC system in Halle 550 (reduces heating energy losses and electricity consumption).
- Water-saving taps (lower water consumption thanks to pressure regulation).
- Dyson hand dryers are installed in public restrooms.
- Motion sensor-controlled water taps (water only runs for 10 seconds at a time).
Waste management:
- Food waste is used to feed a biogas plant.
- We try to avoid using plastics as much as possible and use renewable materials instead – such as bamboo for disposable tableware.
- Recycling system throughout the event location (see item 1).
- We calculate the required amount of food ahead of time, to avoid food waste as best as possible. We also provide to-go boxes, so visitors can take remaining food home with them.
Catering:
We use local suppliers and seasonal foods. As part of Migros, we are limited in our selection of vendors. Migros inspects every supplier in advance to verify compliance with its requirements regarding sustainable development and ensure that its defined sustainability targets are met.
Further commitment:
In line with our commitment to sustainability, we strive to reuse event materials whenever possible. A perfect example of this is the Welcome Banner, which we donate to the Zurich Scouts. They, in turn, repurpose these materials in creative and practical ways for their own activities.
