Dr. George Ioannou is Professor of Production and Operations Management at the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). He has extensive experience and significant achievements in private corporations and public organizations, in addition to the academic, research and educational excellence that governs his activities at the university. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hellenic Railways SA (since December 2024).
During the period 2019-2022 he was the CEO of the Hellenic Energy Exchange Group (EnEx), responsible for the implementation of the European Target Model in Greece, the trading systems for electricity derivatives and natural gas transactions, as well as the coupling of the Greek electricity market with those of Italy and Bulgaria. He promoted an international reach for EnEx, initiating projects in Albania and Cyprus, while he led the transformation of the group from a typical public electricity market operator with a WACC of only 2%, to a modern company with a net profit of over 20%. For his contribution to the development of the Greek energy market, he was honored with the award of the Hellenic Association for Energy Economics (2021). During the period 2007-2009, he was a member of the Board of Directors of OSE Group (Hellenic Railways Organization), contributing to the development of the company towards a corporate entity with dynamic and rational financial foundations. He also served as a member of the Advisory Board of Attica Ventures (2006-2010), giving guidance and advice for effective investments in new businesses with substantial entrepreneurial prospects.
Professor Ioannou was a member of the National Innovation Council (2012-2014) promoting innovative research and technology actions towards business endeavors with tangible operational and financial results. He was also the President of the Evaluation Committee for ΣYZEΥΞIΣ II project, the largest network transformation project of the public sector in the period 2012-2017, within the framework of the Information Society S.A. Finally, as Senior Manager / Manager at Deloitte (2000-2003), he laid the foundations for the involvement of this international consulting firm into the Greek market of enterprise information systems, with emphasis on SAP and JDE.
With respect to academic positions of responsibility, Professor Ioannou served as Director of the English-taught MBA of the Athens University of Economics and Business – MBA International (2007-2017) and led the accreditation process of the program by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). During his tenure, the program reached the Top 10 ranking in Europe, and received the international AMBA Innovation Award for its proactive approaches in Social Media education, as well as Greek awards for digital strategy, use of electronic media and corporate social responsibility. He was also Director of AUEB's Management Science Laboratory (2012-2020, a position he holds at present as well), leveraging five-million-euro research projects and supervising more than ten doctoral dissertations, the recipients of which have significant academic development in Greece and abroad (academic positions at University of the Aegean, Athens University of Economics and Business, Hellenic Open University, University of Peloponnese, City University London, Cardiff University, etc.). During the period 2008-2015 he was a member of the international Academic Advisory Council of Microsoft Co promoting actions related to ERP systems for SMEs, while he has served as a member of the Senate and the Research Committee of AUEB, and of the EIE Committee of the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce.
His research activity focuses on the quantitative / analytical study of business systems in combination with modern information systems, while he has extensive consulting experience in private companies and public organizations. He holds a first degree (Diploma) in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, an M.Sc. from Imperial College, UK, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, USA. He has been honored with the Microsoft Excellence in Education award and with Teaching Excellence awards for the courses he has taught in the MBAs of the Athens University of Economics and Business.
